Your Spiritual Gifts
A spiritual gift is a special ability that God gives, according to His grace, to each member of the body of Christ to be used for the development of the church.
Just as the human body has a variety of members or organs, so the body of Christ – the church – is comprised of a great variety of Christians, each of whom has his or her own special function. Which functions each member is to fulfill is determined, for the most part, by his or her spiritual gift(s).
God doesn’t give you spiritual gifts as a reward for your steadfast character or spiritual maturity…They are distributed according to God’s plan.
Every Christian (that means brand new Christians, too) has at least one spiritual gift. (1 Cor. 12:7-11)
All the major statements in the New Testament relating to spiritual gifts are made in the context of the body of Christ and its growth (Rom 12:1, Cor 12, Eph 4). Spiritual gifts are not just for the growth of individual believers; their primary purpose is to benefit others. Anyone who withdraws from Christian fellowship cannot use his or her gifts as God intended. Any reflections upon spiritual gifts must occur in correlation with church development.
When Christians serve in their area of giftedness, they generally function less in their own strength and more in the power of the Holy Spirit.
